Peggy O'Hara is the 76 year old mother of Volunteer Patsy O'Hara (INLA) who died on 21st May 1981 after sixty-one days on hunger strike. Her husband Jim died a number of years ago. She is a mother and grandmother who has deep love and devotion for her family who are extremely close.
Peggy has decided to stand in the March 7th election for a number of reasons, primarily she feels that the move towards acceptance of partition, the endorsing of the PSNI and British court system is against all that republicanism is about. Republicanism is about getting Britain out of Ireland - not endorsing their armed forces and civil structures. She is totally against these moves and has decided to put herself up as a focal point for the many others who feel the same way. The election of March 7th has given her and others a chance to put their position to the test in front of the electorate.
Peggy has received numerous messages of support from her friends and neighbours in Derry. Many people have pledged to support her campaign in Derry and numerous messages have also come in from around the world from as far away as Australia, the US and Europe.
Since the Good Friday Agreement there has been a demonisation campaign against republicans who oppose British involvement in Ireland. Our campaign intends to breath new life into a credible opposition to the ongoing capitulation of some republicans to Britain and the DUP. The RUC/PSNI are not and never can be an acceptable police force to republicans in any part of Ireland by virtue of the fact that they are and will continue to be a British police force in our country whose primary aim is to serve and protect Britain's involvement in Ireland. A policing agreement that is acceptable to both the British government and the DUP can offer nothing to republicanism other than the normalisation of British rule in Ireland and continued partition. Sinn Fein's recent Ard Fheis motion on policing was actually presided over by Ian Paisley and Peter Robinson and re-written to suit them. Sinn Fein accepted the DUP changes and put them to their Ard Fheis which overwhelmingly supported the DUP changes. It is Peggy's belief that the delegates were sold a pup by their leadership and she intends to offer the voters in Foyle an opportunity to register a protest at this turn of events. Sinn Fein has taken the republican people for granted for too long and now is your chance to oppose the route that they have taken republicanism. Regardless of the how many Catholics join the new RUC,
they will still come under the ultimate control of the British parliament.
Would it matter if the cop who searches your car or kicks your door down is
a neighbour? No amount of advisory boards or 'accountablility mechanisms'
will change the fact that MI5 will have full control of 'matters of national
security' which in effect means carte blanche to do what they want.
Please check back with this website as it is still under construction. Thank You.
